Vietnamese iced coffee has become very popular over the last decade. The drink was created in the 1970s at the Hanoi Hilton prison camp where prisoners had access only to water or instant coffee. They would mix the two together to create their favorite beverage.

“Coffee + ice Vietnamese iced coffee,” says author David Lebovitz. He explains that the drink is usually served cold, but some cafes serve it hot. In Vietnam, they also add condensed milk to give it a sweeter taste.

This homemade Vietnamese Iced Coffee Recipe uses only two ingredients. You’ll find it easy to make and you won’t believe how delicious it is.

My version requires only three steps:

1. Mix together equal parts water and coffee concentrate.

2. Add ice cubes and stir.

3. Top off with lemon juice and garnish with mint leaves.

The original recipe calls for adding sugar, but I don’t think anyone needs sweetened iced coffee anymore. And since my version doesn’t contain any added sugars, it’s much healthier too.

You’ll want to use a high quality Vietnamese coffee concentrate because it contains no artificial flavors or colors. If you’re looking for a good brand, try “Vietnam Style”.

The Vietnamese Coffee Method

This method makes strong coffee without bitterness.


1 cup water

2 cups freshly ground beans

½ teaspoon sugar



This recipe uses condensed milk, so it tastes best when served warm. If you don’t have a microwave oven, heat the mixture over medium heat in a small saucepan for about 5 minutes. You can also use a double boiler.

If you’re making this recipe with whole milk, reduce the amount of sugar called for here.

The condensed milk gives the coffee a rich flavor.

Use an espresso machine if you like strong coffee.
